Erroneous Yahoo! quotes / making QFX files work with Money / UK, French & Int’l English Money 2005 1105 updates

Over the last several weeks, some of the quotes from Yahoo! Finance (where PocketSense, hleOfxQuotes and TFB’s script get the quotes from) have been erroneous and we were all hoping they would just get “fixed”. It turns out a reader of TFB’s (The Finance Buff) Blog found the appropriate help link to notify Yahoo! of the issue and it was fixed soon after it was submitted. I’m posting that link here with a tag, so that next time it might be accessed sooner by one of us for a quicker resolve. See the first comment below for suggested wording.

Some other recent developments:

1. Some banks such as Bank of America and Chase no longer offer Microsoft Money OFX downloads on their website, but they DO offer Intuit Quicken Web Connect (QFX) files (or some other similar wording) and those work just as well, but you may not realize you have that option. I’ve exerpted the solution from another one of my Blog pages (read that blog page if you want to learn what’s different between OFX and QFX) here to reveal how to make QFX files work for you…

If you download QFX files from your financial institution’s website (that is the default choice on Bank of America’s Mastercard website now) , you can Save and then import them directly into Money [File->Import->Downloaded Statement…], but you may have to click on type: ALL FILES to see the file. You can skip the Save step and have the file import on it’s own by following the registry addition below.

Cal Learner has developed this registry fix that you could run, so that QFX files will behave just like OFX and will import into Money automatically:

Here is a 2-step way to create that registry file:

1. Open a new Notepad file, and paste the following lines between the ===delimiter lines=== below into the file.

==================begin QFX2OFX.reg========

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.qfx]
“Content Type”=”text/qfx”
@=”ofx.Document”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.qfx\ofx.Document]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.qfx\ofx.Document\ShellNew]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-qfx]
“Extension”=”.qfx”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\text/qfx]
“Extension”=”.qfx”

================end QFX2OFX.reg==========

2. Save the file as “QFX2OFX.reg” and Run.

2. Although the Money servers are OFFLINE for most purposes, they are still supplying quotes for some users that are using older versions of Money and/or still have time left on their subscription. Who knows for how much longer though.

3. As of today, Microsoft has finally made available the full 1105 version of UK Money 2005, and it can be downloaded here which will allow new installations to be able to read your UK Money data files. The file can be used to do a full UK Money 2005 (level 1105) install. You do not have to install a previous version and then upgrade.

4. [added 7/29/2011] Microsoft has also made available the full 1105 version of International English Money 2005, and it can be downloaded here which will allow new installations to be able to read your International English (aka ROW) Money data files. The file can be used to do a full International English Money 2005 (level 1105) install. You do not have to install a previous version and then upgrade.

5. [added 8/1/2011] Microsoft has also made available the full 1105 version of French Money 2005, and it can be downloaded here which will allow new installations to be able to read your French Money data files. The file can be used to do a full French Money 2005 (level 1105) install. You do not have to install a previous version and then upgrade.

    Re: Yahoo bad data. Suggest [when reporting the problem to Yahoo] that you just mention: “I am seeing incorrect or inconsistent data when downloading quotes to a CSV file from Yahoo! Finance using URL http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?f=nl1d1t1&s=YHOO (replace YHOO with the symbol in question).

    No need to mention PocketSense, hleOfxQuotes or TFB [when reporting the problem to Yahoo] otherwise you will likely to get a response of “please contact your software provider for support”.

    Thanks Hung. I clarified your comment somewhat, but that’s a good suggestion you make and I pointed it out in the blog.

    I executed the QFX2OFX registry hack and instead of Money importing the file directly, Notepad is opening and displaying the downloaded data. Any idea what’s going wrong?

    As always, thanks for the help. Over time I’ve added new accounts and closed others and PocketSense has allowed me to continue using all the functionality of MS Money. As long as Quicken doesn’t change their download file structure it looks like we’ll all be good for quite some time.

    Hi Ken,

    Hopefully Cal will pipe in. This is taken directly from his comment http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/money/thread/220ed237-fa35-4476-bd9b-31851fd77474 and is supposed to make QFX behave the same as OFX.

    I have a feeling you don’t have “Hide file extensions for known file types” unchecked in “Folder Options > View”, so the file you created is actually qfx2ofx.reg.txt and you need to get rid of the .txt

    This is another version of the procedure that Cal stated elsewhere…

    Create a new file with this command: notepad qfx2ofx.reg
    Yes, you want Notepad to create a new file. Copy the 15 lines (including 5 blank lines) between the delimiters that have the equal signs. The part that you copy should have no equal signs. Paste those copied lines into Notepad. Exit Notepad with File->Save. File->Exit.

    Then run the following command: qfx2ofx.reg
    That will execute the command that will modify the registry for you. Yes, you want to allow the change to your computer.

    If you right click the QFX file and Click on “Open with…” and point to “Microsoft Money Import Handler” as well as click on the box “Always use this program to open this file type”, that should fix the issue as well.

    Although I’m perfectly capable of screwing up (and do so often), in this case I did create and execute the .reg file correctly so not sure why the downloaded qfx files were opening in Notepad. However I just followed the suggestion in your last paragraph and associated qfx files with the Money Import Handler. That appears to have solved the problem.

    It’s possible your quote from Cal could confuse later readers as it mentions qif2ofx.reg whereas everything else referred to qfx2ofx.reg.

    Appreciate the help.

    Thanks Ken.

    I altered the comment as you suggested, and I wonder if my “Open with…” suggestion is perhaps the better solution, rather than Cal’s registry addition. I don’t recall how I actually solved the QFX behavior in my computer, but I’m glad to hear yours works now too.

    I’m able to import the QFX file from Bank of America.

    The problem is, even though I import it and reconcile all the transactions, if I import it again the next day, it still shows all the transactions I reconciled the day before, as un-reconciled. So, I have to go through a month’s worth of accepting the transactions again.

    Any ideas on why this happens ?

    Thanks

    Mike,

    I just reimported my BoA QFX file and it behaved perfectly in Money (I thought maybe the transaction IDs might be slightly different, which would cause the behavior you explained) so I can think of no explanation other than you didn’t exit out of your Money database properly.

    The money offline that you developed is terrific. But now I have a problem, I bought a new computer and installed Money Plus, I have only 60 days to enter transactions.
    Could you tell me what I have to do to erase completely Money Plus and run it again.
    I think that I have to do this procedure each 60 days, is this true?

    Pablo,
    Simply go to this page and download the Sunset edition of Money Plus and install that instead.

  11. Here is the registry change I had to make to get the seamless import in Windows 7:
    1. open a new Notepad file and paste everything between the delimeter files into it:
    ============================
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.qfx]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.qfx\OpenWithList]
    “a”=”NOTEPAD.EXE”
    “MRUList”=”a”

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.qfx\OpenWithProgids]
    “ofx.Document”=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.qfx\UserChoice]
    “Progid”=”ofx.Document”
    ============================

    then save as “qfximport7.reg” (with the quotes) and double-click on it.
